A Total Disaster!

 In blog_posts

Is it just me? Or does the world feel like it’s a little off kilter? So many things, both good and bad, happen daily. Sometimes we have to take a moment to change our perspective to understand if a certain event is positive or negative. And…  Mother nature seems to be throwing a few tantrums! Some days feel like a total disaster!

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit with a friend who had just finished up a home renovation project. The end result was great, the visit was wonderful, and I really can’t wait to get back there again. (R&R on a lake. Yes, please!) Unfortunately, shortly after we left, she experienced a major plumbing issue that resulted in an insurance claim.  Her insurance company was quick to respond and send someone to inspect the damage. It seemed like this was on the fast track to recovery.

However, the claims inspector gave her information about a potential condition of her policy that would limit the repair reimbursement.  Not afraid of a “little light reading”, she pulled out her policy and read the fine print, only to find that she could not match up to what the inspector said.  She then reached out to the agent who had sold her the policy but was referred to speak with the claims adjuster who “would be able to explain the coverage”.

Wait… What?

You would think the agent would have access to the policy details. Yet, this did not seem to be the case. What started out as a speedy road to recovery and repair quickly turned into a series of unanswered questions and concerns over what would be covered. My recommendation was that she might need to seek the support of an insurance coverage attorney.

What should have been a simple homeowner’s insurance claim has become a total disaster!

Hitting even closer to home, a recent tornado impacted one of my sons. I’m thankful that he was not hurt. However, his home is a mess! Part of the roof is gone, belongings have been strewn about, and there’s a fair amount of damage to start working through. While he was attempting to literally pick up the pieces and start his own road to recovery, he also faced the stress and emotions that come with such a horrific event.

In his case, being a tenant rather than a homeowner lessened his burden of responsibility. However, even tenants have insurance claims to deal with. Knowing the details and limits of a renters insurance policy is the key to ensuring claims are processed correctly and in a timely fashion.

This is where an advocate comes in!

Remember that story I told you about playing “Advocate” as a kid? Who knew it would turn out that we, as consumers, would need advocates to help us navigate catastrophic situations in our lives. From business agreements to insurance claims, and from accidental injury to “Acts of God”, we all will need guidance and legal counsel at some point in our lives. It is my pleasure to do what I do so that I can help others avoid the pitfalls and financial constraints that come with a total disaster.
